After publishing my last article about unlocking a door remotely with TTLock, I noticed something interesting.
A lot of people told me the same thing:
“The lock works perfectly when I’m nearby, but remote unlocking just doesn’t work.”
After helping a few friends check their setups, the reason was almost always the same.
They were missing one key piece —or they thought it was set up, but it wasn’t actually working.
That missing piece is the TTLock Wi-Fi Gateway.
This article is for anyone who feels stuck, confused, or slightly annoyed at this stage. No technical background required. Just follow the steps.
Why Remote Unlocking Doesn’t Work (Even If the Lock Is Installed)
Let’s clear this up first.
TTLock smart locks work in two different ways:
Bluetooth – works only when you’re close to the door
Internet (remote) – works from anywhere
If your lock works when you’re standing next to it but fails the moment you leave, nothing is “broken”.
It simply means:
👉 The Wi-Fi Gateway isn’t connected yet.
Without a gateway, TTLock is a nearby smart lock. With a gateway, it becomes a remote access system.
If you’re wondering what exactly the difference is between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Gateway, and why it matters so much for your smart lock experience, stay tuned for the next article where we’ll dive deep into “Bluetooth vs Gateway: What’s the Real Difference?”
This will clear up all the confusion and help you get the most out of your TTLock system.
What Is a TTLock Wi-Fi Gateway?

The Wi-Fi Gateway is a small device that acts as a bridge between:
Your smart lock
Your home or office Wi-Fi
The TTLock app on your phone
In simple terms:
The lock talks to the gateway. The gateway talks to the internet. Your phone talks to both.
You need a TTLock Wi-Fi Gateway if you want to unlock the door when you’re not there, manage a shop, office, or shared space, avoid rushing back just to open a door, or want real-time access records.
If you only ever unlock the door while standing in front of it, you can survive without one.
Most people can’t.
What You Need Before Setting Up the Gateway
Before starting, take one minute to check these first. Skipping this step is the #1 reason Wi-Fi Gateway setups fail.
You’ll need:
A TTLock smart lock (already installed and working)
The TTLock app (latest version recommended)
A 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network ⚠️ (very important)
A stable internet connection
Power for the Wi-Fi Gateway
⚠️ Important note about Wi-Fi (Please read)
Most TTLock Wi-Fi gateways do not support 5GHz Wi-Fi.
In simple terms, smart locks don’t need speed —they need a stable connection. That’s why 2.4GHz is the correct choice for gateways and smart locks.
If your router combines 2.4GHz and 5GHz under the same network name, the gateway may fail to connect.
💡Here’s a little insider tip we often use at home:
Set up a 2.4GHz guest Wi-Fi and use it only for the smart lock and gateway.
This avoids frequency conflicts and keeps your main Wi-Fi setup unchanged.

How to Check if Your Wi-Fi is 2.4GHz in 30 Seconds
Here’s a super quick way to find out if your Wi-Fi network is 2.4GHz or 5GHz, so you can connect your TTLock Gateway without headaches.
Method 1: Check Your Wi-Fi Name (SSID)
Some routers add “_2.4G” or “_5G” at the end of the network name.
If you see this, simply connect your gateway to the network with “_2.4G” in the name.
Method 2: Use Your Phone’s Wi-Fi Settings
On Android:
Go to Wi-Fi settings
Tap your connected network
Look for “Frequency” or “Band” info — it should say 2.4GHz or 5GHz.
On iPhone:iOS doesn’t show frequency directly, but you can:
Check the Name: See if your router has two separate names (SSIDs), such as Home_WiFi and Home_WiFi_5G. If you are connected to the one without "5G," it is likely 2.4 GHz.
Use a free app like WiFi SweetSpots or Network Analyzer
These apps show detailed Wi-Fi info including frequency bands.
Method 3: Router Admin Page (for advanced users)
Log in to your router’s admin page (usually via browser at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1)
Look for Wireless settings
Check which bands are enabled and their network names

Make sure the gateway is powered on
Move it closer to the lock
Check that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone
Q2: Wi-Fi connection fails during setup. Any tips?
Confirm you’re using 2.4GHz Wi-Fi
Double-check the password
Avoid unstable Wi-Fi extenders during setup
Q3: Remote unlocking still doesn’t work. Why?
Check if the gateway shows online
Make sure your lock battery isn’t low
Confirm your account has admin permission
Q4: The gateway shows offline. How to fix?
Restart the gateway
Restart your router
Check internet stability
Most issues come down to Wi-Fi, not the lock itself.
Tips for a Stable Remote Unlocking Experience
A few small things make a big difference:
Place the gateway within the recommended distance
Avoid hiding it behind metal objects
Keep lock batteries in good condition
Turn on notifications and access records
Remote unlocking works best when the connection is boring and stable.
If remote unlocking didn’t work for you before, you weren’t doing anything wrong.
You were just missing one step.
Once the Wi-Fi Gateway is set up properly, TTLock stops being just a smart lock and becomes something much more useful.
