What Actually Makes a Lock Secure? (It’s Not What Most People Think)

After sharing a recent post about different types of locks, one question kept coming up:

“So… what actually makes a lock secure?”

If you took a closer look at the previous post, you might already know the answer is simpler than most people think.

It’s not the handle.

It’s not how modern it looks.

It’s how the lock system actually works.

Most doors today come with a handle lock.

And for everyday use, that’s perfectly fine.

It lets you open and close the door easily.

But here’s the problem:

A handle lock is designed for convenience — not security.

In many cases,it can be forced open without much effort. And that’s where the deadbolt comes in.

A deadbolt doesn’t rely on a spring mechanism.

It can’t simply be pushed open.

It’s what actually keeps the door secure.

In fact, most secure setups use both:

  • A handle lock for daily use

  • A deadbolt for real protection

And when you combine this with a smart lock system, you’re not just adding convenience —you’re adding control.

Access can be managed.

Entry can be tracked.

And keys are no longer the weak point.

And this is where things are starting to change.

Because today, you don’t have to choose between security and convenience anymore.

You can have both.

Modern smart locks are now built around deadbolt systems —combining strong physical security with features like passcodes, remote access, and activity tracking.

In other words,it’s no longer just about locking your door.

It’s about controlling access.

And of course, not every door is designed for a traditional deadbolt setup.

In Ireland, most homes don’t actually use traditional deadbolts.

Instead, they rely on euro cylinder and multipoint locking systems —which are common across Europe.

So does that mean deadbolts don’t exist in Ireland? Not quite.

You’ll still find deadbolt-style locks in certain setups — just not as commonly as in the US.

Deadbolts are more often used in:

  • Wooden doors (especially in older houses)

  • Internal doors or office doors

  • Apartments or retrofit setups

  • Some commercial or rental properties

And in these cases, upgrading to a smart deadbolt can be one of the simplest and most effective options.

Because the structure is already there.

But for most Irish homes with multipoint systems,a different approach usually makes more sense.

here’s the catch:

Not all of these systems provide the same level of security.

We also work with both smart deadbolt and smart cylinder solutions,

depending on what the door actually needs.

If your door already uses a deadbolt, upgrading can be surprisingly simple.
