It All Started Nine Years Ago
When people ask me why we started Bear and Me, I always say — the story begins nearly nine years ago, with my first experience using a smart lock.
Before moving to Ireland, I lived in Taiwan, where smart home technology was just starting to emerge. Back then, smart locks weren’t as common — mostly seen in luxury residential buildings or tech companies. But we installed one in a small cram school I helped manage, and it changed the way we thought about everyday security.
Staff could open the door with a fingerprint. No more waiting for someone with a key. Even the cleaning lady could use a temporary code. It was safer, smoother, and simply more efficient.
The Technology Grew — And So Did the Idea
Over the years, I watched smart lock technology become more refined and widely adopted. During our travels across Asia, I noticed how deeply smart living had been integrated — from smart lights to full home security systems. Countries like China and Taiwan had made this way of living part of the everyday.
But when we moved to Ireland, we noticed a different story. Smart locks were still far from mainstream. That contrast sparked something in us — a sense of opportunity. What if we could bridge that gap? What if we could bring secure, intelligent living to more families and businesses in Ireland?
A Brand Inspired by Family
That idea quickly became more than just a business plan — it became a mission rooted in our values as a family.
As parents, we think about safety every day. We have a daughter, and we want her — and everyone — to feel protected. That’s why we named our company Bear and Me.
“Bear” represents our CEO — the protector of the family.
“Me” represents our daughter.
Together, the name reflects the relationship between caregiver and loved one — and the kind of safety we want every family to feel.
The Challenges We Faced
Of course, bringing smart locks to Ireland hasn’t been simple.
One of the biggest hurdles is that the lock structures here — the mortise sizes — are different from those in Asia. Finding manufacturers that meet both the sizing and strict EU certifications hasn’t been easy. But we’ve stayed committed to our values: only offering products we would use ourselves.
We also believe smart locks aren’t just for homes. They’re perfect for B&Bs, cafés, and small businesses — anywhere security and convenience matter. And with so many new housing developments being built, it’s the perfect time to bring smart technology in from the beginning.
