Why Can’t I Unlock My Smart Lock Remotely? Bluetooth vs Gateway Explained

One of the most common questions people ask after getting a smart lock is:
“Why can I unlock the door when I’m standing beside it, but not when I’m away?”
Fair question.
Many people assume that once they have a smart lock, they can automatically control it from anywhere.
After all, it’s called a smart lock, right?
But here’s the part that often causes confusion:
Not every smart lock is directly connected to Wi-Fi all the time.
Many TTLock smart locks mainly use Bluetooth to communicate with your phone when you are nearby.
If you want to control the lock remotely — for example, when you are at work, travelling, managing a shop, or helping a guest check in — you may need an extra device called a Wi-Fi Gateway.
Think of it like this:
Bluetooth is for when you are there. Gateway is for when you are not.
That is the simplest way to understand the difference.
In this article, I’ll explain what Bluetooth means in a smart lock, what a TTLock Wi-Fi Gateway does, the difference between using a smart lock with or without a gateway, and how to decide whether you actually need one.
Because honestly? Not everyone does.
I personally don’t use a gateway at home at the moment because I work from home most of the time. For my daily routine, Bluetooth is enough.
But for a BNB, rental property, office, clinic, shop, or shared space? That is where a gateway can become much more useful.
So let’s break it down in normal human language — no tech headache required.
Before we even talk about Bluetooth and Gateway, there is one thing we need to clear up first:
But isn’t a smart lock connected to Wi-Fi?
This is the part that surprises many people.
Because it is called a smart lock, it is easy to assume that the lock is always connected to Wi-Fi, just like your phone, laptop, or smart TV.
But not always.
Many TTLock smart locks mainly use Bluetooth to communicate with your phone when you are nearby.
And there is a good reason for that: battery life.
Your smart lock is usually powered by batteries. If it had to stay connected to Wi-Fi all day like a phone or laptop, the battery would not be very happy. Let’s just say it would ask for early retirement.
So for everyday use, Bluetooth does a lot of the work.
When you are standing near the door, your phone can connect to the lock through the TTLock app. You can unlock it, manage settings, and use many of the smart features while you are close enough.
That is enough for many everyday situations — unlocking your own front door, changing basic settings, or managing the lock when you are standing close to it.
But when you are not near the door, Bluetooth has one obvious problem:
Bluetooth cannot reach across town.
That is when a gateway becomes useful.
If Bluetooth is the short-distance conversation between your phone and the lock, the gateway is the bridge that helps your lock connect to the internet.
But if you want that extra “smart lock magic” — like unlocking the door when you are not there, checking records remotely, or managing access from another location — that is when a gateway comes in.
First, what does Bluetooth mean in a smart lock?
Bluetooth is a short-range wireless connection.
You probably already use it every day without thinking too much about it — when your phone connects to wireless headphones, your car speaker, a smartwatch, or a portable speaker.
In a smart lock, Bluetooth works in a similar way.
When you are standing near the door, your phone can connect directly to the lock through Bluetooth. This allows you to unlock the door, manage some settings, or update certain access details through the TTLock app.
In simple words:
Bluetooth works when your phone is close enough to the lock.

That is why Bluetooth is great for everyday home use.
If you are coming home, standing outside the door, and opening the lock with your phone, fingerprint, passcode or card, Bluetooth is usually enough. You don’t always need Wi-Fi or a gateway just to use the smart lock normally.
You can think of it a little like Bluetooth headphones. They work well when your phone is nearby, but if you walk too far away, the connection drops. Your smart lock is similar: Bluetooth works well when you are close enough, but it is not designed to reach you across town.
This does not mean Bluetooth is bad. It just means Bluetooth is designed for nearby control.
For example, Bluetooth is usually enough if you want to:
unlock your own front door when you arrive home
use fingerprint, passcode, card or app unlock while you are nearby
manage basic lock settings while standing close to the door
add or update access details when you are on-site
use the smart lock mainly for your own home
This is also one reason many smart locks use Bluetooth as their main connection: it helps keep the lock more battery-friendly than if it had to stay connected to Wi-Fi all day.
So if you mainly use your smart lock for your own front door, and you are usually nearby when you need to unlock or manage it, Bluetooth may be perfectly fine.
But Bluetooth has one clear limit:
It only works when you are close enough.
If you are at work, travelling, managing a rental property, or trying to help someone unlock the door while you are somewhere else, Bluetooth alone may not be enough.
That’s when Bluetooth needs a little help.
So, what is a TTLock Wi-Fi Gateway?
A TTLock Wi-Fi Gateway is a small device that acts as a bridge between your smart lock, your Wi-Fi, and the TTLock app on your phone.
Think of it like a translator.
Your smart lock usually speaks Bluetooth.Your home or office internet speaks Wi-Fi.The gateway sits in the middle and helps them talk to each other.
In simple terms:
The lock talks to the gateway. The gateway talks to the internet.Your phone can then manage the lock remotely through the TTLock app.

This is what allows you to use certain smart lock features even when you are not standing beside the door.
For example, with a gateway, you may be able to unlock the door remotely, check access records, manage certain access settings, or help someone get in when you are somewhere else, depending on your lock model and setup.
Without a gateway, your smart lock can still work very well through Bluetooth when you are nearby.
But with a gateway, the lock becomes much more useful when the door needs to be managed from a distance.
For a normal home, this may or may not matter.
But for a BNB, rental property, office, clinic, shop, or shared space, it can make a big difference.
A real example is one of our self-service laundry clients.
Before upgrading to smart access, the owner had to drive to the shop just to open the door. Every day. Same task, same trip, same little headache.
And if you run a business, you know these “small tasks” are never really small. They quietly eat your time.
With a smart lock and gateway setup, that routine became much easier.
The owner no longer needs to go there just to open the door. Access can be managed remotely, and the shop feels more modern and easier to control.
That is when smart access stops being “just a fancy lock” and starts becoming a practical business tool.
Bluetooth vs Gateway: What’s the difference?
The most important thing to understand is this:
Bluetooth is not “worse”, and Gateway is not automatically “better”.
It depends on what you need your smart lock to do.
So instead of asking:
“Which one is better?”
A better question is:
“How do I actually need to use this door?”
A home front door and a busy shared business door do not always need the same setup.
Here is a simple comparison:
Feature | Bluetooth Only | With Gateway |
Unlock when standing near the door | Yes | Yes |
Unlock when you are away | Usually no | Yes, depending on setup |
Manage lock settings nearby | Yes | Yes |
Manage certain features remotely | Limited | More flexible |
Check access records nearby | Yes | Yes |
Check records remotely | Limited | More useful |
Suitable for simple home use | Yes | Yes, if needed |
Suitable for BNB, shop, office or shared space | Possible, but limited | Usually more practical |
Needs Wi-Fi | No | Yes |
Best for | Everyday nearby use | Remote access management |
Do you really need a Gateway?
Here is my honest answer:
Not everyone needs one.
I personally don’t use a gateway at home at the moment.
Why?
Because I work from home most of the time. If I need to unlock the door, manage the lock, or change a setting, I am usually nearby. For my daily routine, Bluetooth is enough.
And that is exactly the point.
A gateway is very useful, but only when it solves a real problem for you.
So instead of asking, “Should everyone get a gateway?”, ask yourself:
Do I need to manage the door when I am not there?
You may need a gateway if you answer “yes” to any of these:
Do you need to unlock the door when you are away?
Do you need to help guests check in remotely?
Do you manage access for cleaners, staff, tenants or clients?
Do you want to check access records from another location?
Do you often need to avoid driving back just to open a door?
Do you manage a shop, office, clinic, BNB or shared space?
Do other people need access when you are not physically there?
If most of your answers are “no”, Bluetooth may be perfectly enough for your daily use.
But if you found yourself saying, “Yes, that sounds like me,” more than once, then a gateway is probably worth considering. At that point, it is not just another gadget. It becomes a practical tool.
Sometimes the question is not:
“Do I like technology?”
The real question is:
How many times could this save me from driving back just to open a door?
